Schnauzer + Poodle = Adorable!!!
No, wait, even better...Schnauzer + Poodle = Schnoodle. Doesn't that name just kill you?
That is the kind of dog my parents have. A Schnoodle. Her name is Maggie (I know, I know, very confusing, what with my daughter being named Maggie and all...! But I named my child after the dog was named, so it was no one's fault but my own) My parents got Maggie Dog in 2003. She is such a sweet dog.
Maggie Girl has grown up seeing Maggie Dog every time she sees my parents. They bring the dog on the plane with them. So Maggie gets a chance to visit with Maggie Dog a couple of times a year. Here they are when Maggie was still an infant:
Sometimes Maggie is a little shy about the dog, but mostly, she really has fun with her. They play "chase" and "catch" and "run in circles". And Maggie Dog is exceedingly patient with her. Well, this past month, my parents came to California to visit and they brought Maggie Dog. They stayed for one night, and then went on to Hawaii -- to a timeshare where they were not allowed to bring dogs. So we took care of Maggie Dog. For two whole weeks -- and it was surprisingly fun! I thought that the noise of her little toenails skittering across the kitchen tiles would drive me crazy, and that having to walk her would be a big pain. But the truth is -- she was really good company. She was cuddly and attentive, and really funny. And now that my parents have come and taken her back to Arlington -- I miss her! We all do.
So. The question is - should we get a dog? We had told Maggie that she needed to be eight before we got a dog. But she is an only child. A dog could be a sort of a surrogate sibling (one which doesn't require saving for a college education). Kevin and I have bumped the age limit down to six. We shall see. My mother is so excited by the possibility of us getting a dog that she has offered to buy us a schnoodle, train it, and bring it to California for us. I can't believe she would really do that for us. But if she is serious....well.... we may just take her up on it!
